It has been on my mind a lot recently, this subtle confusion between what is common and what is truly normal. It is a distinction that lies at the very heart of the chiropractic perspective on health. However, it often feels as if we as a society have sleep-walked into accepting a state of being that is far from our birthright.
We see so much struggle around us, so much dis-ease, that we begin to believe it is an inevitable part of life. But I feel it is so important for us to question this assumption.
Think about how often we hear people say it is normal to have back pain as you get older, or that headaches are just a part of a stressful life. We are told that feeling tired all the time is normal for a parent.
These things are incredibly common, yes, but are they truly normal? Is it the natural, intended state of the human body to be in pain, to be exhausted, to be merely coping? I believe the answer is no.
This acceptance of what is common has lowered our expectations for what is possible in our own lives. We have started to believe that feeling ‘just okay’ is a success, aiming for the absence of a crisis rather than the presence of true vitality.
But our natural state is not one of mediocrity. It is one of energy, of clarity, of resilience, and of connection to ourselves and the world around us. To feel ‘just okay’ is to be disconnected from this innate potential.
So how do we get to this place? It rarely happens overnight, but through a slow, gradual accumulation of all the stresses of life. These are the physical, chemical, and emotional stresses we encounter every day.
Each one adds a layer of tension to our system. It is like a guitar string being slowly tightened, day by day, until the tone becomes distorted and the string is so tight it can barely vibrate at all.
This tension creates interference in our nervous system, the master communication network that runs our entire body. When messages are distorted by this stress, the body’s ability to heal and regulate itself is compromised.
My work as a chiropractor is to help clear this interference. The adjustment is a gentle reminder to the body of its natural state of ease and its true normal.
Our society is so focused on symptoms, and we are taught to silence them, numb them, or cut them out. But symptoms are just the body’s alarm bells, the desperate shouts that come after the whispers have been ignored.
To simply silence the alarm without looking for the fire is a short term solution that often leads to long term consequences. The true path to health is to understand why the alarm is ringing in the first place.
This is a call to take back our power and to reject the limitations of what is common. It is a call to reclaim what is normal.
Normal is a body that heals itself. Normal is waking up with energy, a mind that is clear, and a spirit that is free. By removing the interference within our own systems, we can redefine what is possible for our health and our lives.
Much love always to our Wildheart Tribe xx
