What Your Muscles Are Holding

There is a moment most evenings when I notice my shoulders. They’ve been sitting somewhere near my ears for hours. I never decided to put them there.

Nobody teaches us to read that. We’re taught that tight muscles come from a bad chair, a heavy lift, or an awkward twist in the garden. Those explanations matter but they’re rarely the whole story.

What I’ve learnt in twenty years of chiropractic is that people hold things their words haven’t caught up with yet.

The Body Keeps Its Own Record

Your muscles aren’t simply engines for movement. They’re also an archive, and a remarkably honest one.

When we meet stress, conflict, or the low hum of a life lived too fast, the nervous system answers before we think. The body braces. It tightens and it guards.

That response is meant to be brief.

But when the pressure never quite lifts, the bracing never quite switches off. And what began as a reaction settles in as a baseline.

Tension Alters the Tone

In chiropractic thinking we talk about tone. It’s the tension a nervous system carries, the frequency it runs at.

As in: alter the tension on a guitar string and the music is wrong, however good the guitarist. I believe something similar is often true of the body.

When muscles stay locked, they pull and torque on the tissues running through and beside them. The signal is still there. It just carries more static.

The Cost of Carrying It

Holding patterns like these are expensive. Some muscle groups end up overworked and exhausted while their opposites go quiet and weak.

That asymmetry changes how gravity meets your frame. Joints move through smaller ranges. Fatigue arrives earlier, and wear gathers in the places doing more than their share.

Our culture answers this with a gel, a tablet, or a stretch on a Tuesday. That provides comfort but a signal that’s repeatedly overridden tends to get louder, not quieter.

You Can’t Think Your Way Out

Now here’s the part that surprises people.

Insight alone rarely shifts a pattern the body has held for ten years. You can understand exactly where your tension came from yet still find your shoulders near your ears at six in the evening.

The pattern isn’t stored as an idea. It’s stored in tissue. So the work has to meet the body where the body actually lives. Not above it, in the commentary, but in it.

An Invitation, Not a Correction

This is where chiropractic sits, for me. It has never been about cracking backs or chasing a sore spot.

An adjustment is an invitation. It asks the nervous system whether it still needs the armour it put on years ago. Often the answer that comes back is no.

Some call it ease. Some call it space. Some simply feel more like themselves. What I think is happening is a return to tone, and with that, a return to wholeness.

A Quieter Kind of Self-Care

Your history doesn’t have to keep writing your physiology. That’s not a small thing to know.

Much of what we call self-care is really self-management, another task on a list. This is something else. It’s the choice to stop overriding your own intelligence and start listening to it.

Much love always to our Wildheart Tribe xx
